Nekton

Nekton explores and protects the ocean—our planet's most vital, yet least understood ecosystem. By combining pioneering science, storytelling, and collaboration, Nekton accelerates ocean conservation and connects people everywhere to the sea's extraordinary life and importance.

This year, Kensington contributed over $275,000, bringing total support to $3.15 million. Our partnership centered on Nekton's newest initiative, Ocean Rising, which embeds the ocean into everyday life through music, fashion, art, gaming, and social media. By weaving ocean themes into culture, Ocean Rising fosters empathy, awareness, and action for ocean protection. In its inaugural year, the program reached an in-person audience of more than 10,000 across five major events.

Meanwhile, First Descent: Comoros, Nekton’s major expedition in October and November 2025, marked a significant milestone for the organization. Funded in fiscal year 2025, the data retrieved from this mission will build on Nekton's pioneering research in the Indian Ocean, focusing on the Comoros archipelago—a region renowned for its extraordinary marine biodiversity, yet still one of the least studied areas of the ocean. Its ecological importance and critical knowledge gaps made it an ideal location for advancing global understanding of marine life and supporting the island nation's long-term conservation strategy.

Earlier this year, Nekton partnered with BOAT International to support the 10th anniversary of The Ocean Awards, a program that recognizes the achievements of individuals, groups, and organizations dedicated to restoring the health of our ocean. 

Seven winners were awarded in five categories: Local Hero, Young Initiative, Innovation, Science Impact, and Ocean Education.
